Car wash in Geneva: prices, rules and waterless washing

In Geneva a waterless exterior wash done where your car is parked usually costs between 50 and 90 francs, and a full interior and exterior clean between 120 and 250 francs, depending on the size and state of the vehicle. Washing your car with a hose and soap on the street is, as a rule, not allowed.

How much does a car wash cost in Geneva?

Can you wash your car on the street or outside your home in Geneva?

As a rule, no. The federal Waters Protection Act (LEaux/GSchG, notably art. 6 and 7) forbids water polluted by detergents, oil or hydrocarbons from reaching rainwater drains, the soil or watercourses. Such water has to go to the sewer after suitable treatment, for example through the oil and hydrocarbon separators fitted in car-wash stations. Geneva police rules also forbid letting washing water run onto the public road.

Washing your car with a hose and soap on the street, in a private parking space or on permeable ground such as gravel is therefore generally not permitted. That leaves three options:

• a car-wash station;
• a waterless wash, using products made for it;
• a professional mobile service equipped to collect the wastewater.

How does a waterless car wash work?

The provider sprays on a product that loosens and encapsulates the dirt, then wipes it off with clean microfibre cloths, one panel at a time. Nothing runs onto the ground, so the job can be done in a car park, an underground garage or your own parking space.

The method suits a car that is looked after: dust, rain marks, pollen, insects. It has limits. Bodywork covered in mud, sand or road salt can be scratched if it is wiped directly. In that case a high-pressure pre-wash at a station is the better choice, followed by a waterless finish.

The interior is easy to clean on the spot. For fabric seats, an extraction machine sucks up the dirty water as it goes.

What makes the price vary?

• Vehicle size: an SUV, a people carrier or a van often costs more than a small city car.
• Condition: pet hair, stains, a smoke smell or sand in the mats make the job longer.
• Extras: protective wax, leather care, headlights, engine bay.
• Access: a power socket nearby helps with vacuuming, otherwise the provider has to bring their own equipment.
